Insects

Many insects live amongst the vines.

Some species, such as worms, caterpillars, borers and cochineals, are pests and are a concern for the winegrowers as they can quickly destroy a harvest.

Other insects, such as ladybirds, mites, spiders, wasps and flies, protect the vine by consuming the pests.

Birds, bats, amphibians and reptiles also eat a lot of insects.

Work on the vineyard in summer

In summer, the winegrower concentrates entirely on shearing.
In July, the winegrower removes particular shoots to maintain good air circulation around the vine and to increase the amount of sunshine that the grapes receive.
During this period, the winegrower must also pull up weeds and protect the plants against disease.
